TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil in Pittsburgh review

Thursday, May 12, 2011

Driving through Pittsburgh we were able to find the Grand Chapiteau  (Cirque Du Soleil's trademark big top) quite easily.  Located just off of 20th street in Pittsburgh's Strip District, there was ample parking for the event.  My husband and I had talked excitedly about what to expect, as we have never been to any Cirque Du Soleil performance before. The parking attendants directed everyone to their parking spot. Before long we were headed through the gates toward the Grand Chapiteau.

Friendly TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil staff  greeted you as you came through the gate.  Everything was clearly marked from the restrooms to which door you had to go through according to your ticket.  Although it was busy, we got out food and drinks for the performance with a smile and a thank you.  We found our door quickly and were soon seated by helpful staff.  Even the seats that were further away were still good seats.

The show begins with a little bit of comedy.  Each act in the TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil was thrilling.  I found myself holding my breathe and shaking my head in disbelief at times. I wasn't sure initially what my husband would think of the show.  It only took about 15 minutes into the 2 and a half hour show for me to know he was enjoying himself too.

The visual appeal of TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil was unbelievable. From the gorgeous costumes to the stage entrance which changed with some type of digital effects for each performance.  Every detail was accounted for.

As for the performers themselves, they seemed almost superhuman at times.  The degree of strength, balance, talent, and professionalism deserves to be pointed out. I saw the TOTEM performers complete feats I've never seen live before. I don't want to spoil it for some of my readers that are going.  So I'll just say, my husband and I talked about what we saw almost the whole way home (we had an 1hr and 45 minute drive home).  Even as we laid our head on our pillow my husband said "I just can't get over that guy......."  Well you'll just have to see the show for yourself.

TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil in Pittsburgh ran like a well oiled machine.  Everything from the parking situation to the way you were seated, the performance, to exiting the show was a smooth transition.  Every single staff member we encountered did their job well and made the experience very memorable.

The shows open to the public today in Pittsburgh and run until June 5, 2011.  You can buy your tickets for the Pittsburgh shows HERE.  There are even family specials where you can take a family of four for $131.

If you're not near Pittsburgh you can still catch TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil. TOTEM will be at the following locations:

Montreal, Quebec opening June 16 2011

Toronto, Ontario opening Aug. 11, 2011

San Francisco, CA "coming soon"

London, UK opening Jan. 6, 2012

If you have the opportunity to see this show, I would most certainly recommend it.  Well worth the money for the tickets.  I feel confident that you will be just as pleased with the show as I was.  I also think it important to point out how TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil is giving back with the "One Drop" benefit that gives access to clean water for all and educates on managing one of our precious resources.  At the end of the show they collected pocket change for this benefit as well as other fundraising that is completed throughout the year.

***I received 2 tickets to attend media night for TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil in Pittsburgh May 11 in order to complete a review and host the already completed giveaway. Any opinions expressed are my own. I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post***

Review: The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

This was my family's first visit to The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh.  Locate on the North shore not very far at all from downtown Pittsburgh. Located close to Heinz field, PNC Park, and the Aviary just to name a few landmarks.

We happened to be going to The Childrens' Museum of Pittsburgh the same day as a Steelers pre-season game.  I was a little nervous about that, but it ended up working out just fine.  The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh was not hard to find.  Our hotel had pre-printed step by step directions.

The Childrens' Museum was pretty busy on Saturday.  The parking lot attendant was pleasant and helped us find a spot to park.  Even though it was busy we were able to drop off our tickets and get our wrist bands very quickly.  With so much to do we weren't even sure where we wanted to start.  The first thing we noticed was the tall kind of maze that went up three floors as we learned.  Of course my 8 year old and 6 year old were all over that.  It's called "The Limb Bender"  Here are some pics of the boys having a ball in "The Limb Bender"

In that area was also items from Mr. Roger's Neighborhood.  A fish tank, a tv camera, The castle, displays of the characters in the land of Make Believe and more.  The boys kind of breezed through this part.  I think it was more interesting to my husband and I since we grew up with Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

We then moved onto a room called "The Attic"  this was a fun room with a giant Kaliedescope, A doll house, pictures that make it look like their eyes are following you, and steps that went up to a room that was on an angle called "the gravity room" and you could take  slide down.  We all took the slide, well except my hubby he stayed at the bottom to take pics.

Then from there was a hallway.  There was a few neat exhibits in this area.  They had a button panel set up.  There was a screen with picture of Pittsburgh skyline.  You could choose 1 or 3 Pittsburgh pics and create a computer animated fireworks display to music.  Once you finished your could watch your fireworks display you created.  This was a lot of fun.  From there we went to the "Garage and Workshop"  They had a Smart Car the kids could explore.  The most noticeable thing was the almost tree house-like tower that went up 2 floors.  There were steps to go up and a slide to come down if you wished.  And my OT side was happy because I also noticed an elevator for those not able to hoof it up there.

This is my eight year old and 6 year old at the top of the tower getting ready to come down the slide.  There was also a neat system where someone could stand on the bottom and put a toy parachute on a paddle.  The person on the top would....i believe...turn a crank and it would bring the parachute to the top and you could watch it drift to the bottom.  After the kids came down the slide,

We just had to try the ball maze over our head.  There was a cage on the floor where you could put a ball in the basket and use a pulley system to get it to the kind of wire maze above our heads.

The ball would follow this sort of wire maze around and end in a funnel over head that would drop the balls back down into the cage.  This got a little hectic.  For how busy it was there were kids that kept grabbing the balls from other kids and pulling the ropes 3 or 5 at a time.  It was fun though to watch the balls go around.  There was more to do int his area like the little workshop room with robot gadgets, the giant wooden robot kids could control with levers and inclines for car races.

We then went to the Curious George traveling exhibit.  It was cute. There was  a rocket ship that was a slide, Curious George's apartment building with a pulley system, and a lot more.

One of the room's I was most excited about seeing was "The Nursery" for my 1 year old.  His favorite thing seemed to be what I called "The lite brite wall".  He was facinated by this.  He played with this for a while.  Even when we took him to other areas he always would come back to "The lite brite wall"

We let him try the texture trail.  There were wooden train tables set up, a ball incline where he could roll wooden balls down the incline and it would hit certain things to make sounds.  Another feature he seemed to like was what we called the "bubble seesaw"  Two small children could sit and use the seesaw.  As they moved it would create bubbles in the "bubble wall" I tried to capture this in a picture.

We then moved on to the older boys' most anticipated room..."Waterplay".  I was impressed with this room. They had rain coats and shoes like crocs to put on so they didn't hopefully get drenched.  There was an area with slatted floors that had pipe coming up from the floor. The kids could connect pipes to this and make a pipe system for the water to flow through.  I enjoyed this most with the older boys because they were working together.

They had water way areas that the kids could put together sail boats with foam pieces and sale them on the water way.  They had a larger area then one that was more accessible for the toddlers. My one year old just enjoyed splashing the water.

They wanted to do the "Limb Bender" about 3 times.  We ate at the cafe in the Children's Museum for lunch.  To my surprise it was really very reasonable.  We just got a large cheese pizza for the fam, and drink for each of us, and we got the baby some mac n' cheese and it only came to about $24 bucks so no more than a family trip to McD's as far as the food goes.

Because we allowed the children to linger on exhibits though we ran out of time.  We didn't get to try "The Backyard" which is outdoors.  There were swings and a fort for them to climb in.  There is also "The Studio" where they could create pictures or "The Theatre".  Oh well, maybe next time.

If you're heading to Pittsburgh I would put this on your list of family friendly places to visit.  Reasonable ticket prices, friendly staff, reasonable prices at the cafe, and lots to keep your family entertained.

Away for the weekend for Reviews---My first onsite reviews

Friday, August 13, 2010

My family and I are taking a weekend getaway. If anyone read my post about the Pittsburgh Children's Museum, then you already know about it. If you haven't read it, please check it out: Pittsburgh Children's Museum upcoming review

We're very excited about it.  Even though we only live about an hour and 45 minutes away,  we've never been to the Pittsburgh Children's Museum.  To top it off we're also going to be reviewing the Doubltree Hotel of Pittsburgh which is right in downtown.  The kids are very excited about that.  The idea of staying in a hotel sound like so much fun to them.  I lived in downtown Pittsburgh for a short while.  I used to think how nice the DoubleTree would be to stay at.  They are part of the Hilton family of hotels.

The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh has so many fun things to do.  I'm most excited about "The Nursery" room for my 1 year old son.  With cause and effect activities, art bridge and texture paths and lots more.
The older boys are looking forward to...well...everything.  The Garage and Workshop, Waterplay, and all those.  Plus, the traveling Curious George exhibit is there this month!

The Doubletree of Pittsburgh is where we will be staying the weekend.  I have been extended nothing but great customer service and a welcoming attitude so far and we haven't even arrived yet.  The DoubleTree of Pittsburgh offers amenities like a complimentary shuttle that will take us to the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh from the DoubleTree. They're putting a crib in our hotel room which is great.  We don't have to drag the pack and play along.  They have a fitness room and indoor pool.  The kids and even my hubby are excited about the pool.  They even offer notary services, copying services, and foreign currency exchange for your business trips. You can follow The Double Tree of Pittsburgh on twitter: @DoubletreePgh
If you decide to follow them, let them know that @angiewith3 sent you :-)

When I live in downtown Pittsburgh one of my favorite things was looking out the big window of my 15th floor apart at all the beautiful lights of the city.  Fireworks weren't rare either.  Whether they were for a Pirates game, the Regatta, New year's, or whatever it seemed like there were fireworks several times a month for something.  The gorgeous overlook of Mount Washington.  Going down to point park to see the tree rivers and the Gateway Clippers going by.  You can see Heinz field from Point Park.  Yea you know, where the Steelers play.  GO STEELERS!

I'm hoping we have enough time to make it to the Strip District which is not far from the DoubleTree of Pittsburgh or the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh.  They have neat and unique shops and restaurants.  (No night life for me, this is a family trip this time.  Though, they do have some great bars and clubs in Pittsburgh as well).  My family and I can't decide where we want to eat while we're there.  I love The Melting Pot while the kids and hubby want to go to the Quaker Steak.  I think the Hard Rock Cafe Pittsburgh would be fun too.  We'll see.

I won't be in the blogosphere this weekend so I'll get back to you all and catch up on email on Monday.  Man, I really wish I had a laptop.  I'd even settle for a netbook at this point.

Children's Museum of Pittsburgh Curious George Exhibit and Upcoming Review.

Friday, July 2, 2010

My family and I are not going on a "vacation" this year. We're saving money to get a practical family car next month. I really wanted to do something fun and different as a family though. What would be exciting and not cost an arm and a leg? I started thinking of Pittsburgh, PA. So much to offer but we don't take advantage of the opportunities as much as I'd like to. My main thought was "Well, we haven't been to the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh yet".  Since I've never been there I went to the website to see what they have to offer my family.
www.pittsburghkids.org

The options and activities that the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh   offer are almost overwhelming.  I had no idea it would be so exciting.  The exhibits sound like so much fun.  I'm going to try to contain myself here and not let my inner child get out of hand...BUT...

1. They have a Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood exhibit.  You can swing on his porch swing, you can try on a sweater and sneakers when you go in just like Mr. Roger's did, climb aboard the neighborhood trolley, visit the castle and put on a puppet show, and lots, lots more. See for yourself here: More info on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood Exhibit

2.  The Nursery---This exhibit is for the babies and toddlers in your family.  Like "baby play"  for non-mobile infants and children like tummy time activites, and creeping and crawling activities.  Then there's the "Art bridge and Texture path" for sensory development (the Occupational Therapy Assistant in me says "yay Children's Museum of Pittsburgh!) and more activies in The Nursery: The Nursery Exhibit

More exhibits like the Garage and Workshop, Waterplay, and more:  Even more exhibits

Then there's the current Temporary Exhibit:  Curious George: Let's Get Curious that includes things like:
1.  Apartment Building:  where you can use pulleys to move Curious George throughout the apartment building
2. Construction Site: where you...I mean your kids... can design a building in the construction trailer then get to work building it
3.  Sidewalk Produce Sale: where kids can be the customer or salesperson and weigh, sort and count produce.

There are even more activities including Meet Curious George LIVE every Wed. at 11:30 am and every Sat. at 2 pm until October 2, 2010.

To see more activities and for even more information on the Curious George: Let's Get Curious exhibit visit this site: www.GetCuriousPittsburgh.org you can sign up for emails here to get special offers, tips, and discounts.

Text "GEORGE" to 77007 to receive special offers and discounts via text message

NOT JUST EXHIBITS

While the exhibits sound like a full day of fun already, there's even more at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh.  The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh also offers classes for kids like: Tot Time for children ages 18 mo to 3 yrs with hands on activities, songs, and more using Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory. There's also Woodworking Classes, Prototype day and more in this category as well.

Children's Museum of Pittsburgh also offers workshops and camp ins, Birthday parties, Games, and more.

I contacted the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh.  My family and I will be visiting Aug. 14 with a pass they are providing to see the museum for ourselves and provide a review for you...my readers!  So be on the look out for my review in August.
