EOTD: Magenta and teal

I've been doing this same technique with all my eye looks this last weekend and I really like it!  I've just used different colors.  I have two more variations that I'll show in a separate post, but for now, this is the one I did today.

(Excuse the state of my eyebrows; they're terrible, I'm sorry!)

Products used:

-Almay Bright Eyes eye base+concealer

-NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk

-Coastal Scents 88 Matte eyeshadow palette (medium magenta, light lilac, cool taupe, matte cream)

-Revlon Matte eyeshadow in Tempting Teal (deep matte teal green)

-ELF Mineral eyeshadow in Earthy (shimmery medium sage green)

-MAC Eye Kohl in I Get No Kick (shimmery champagne eyeliner)

-Victoria's Secret eyeliner in Dark Brown

-L'Oreal Double Extend Illuminator mascara

First, prime your eye area and apply a matte white base for the eyeshadows.  Apply a magenta eyeshadow to the lid area, stopping just short of the inner and outer corners.  Blend this out using a lighter lilac shade in the inner corners and throughout the crease.  Tape off the outer edge of your eyes.  Place a deep matte teal or green shade on the outer corner of your lid, creating a slight "outer v" shape using the tape as a guide.  Then, use a crease brush to apply a shimmery medium sage green shade to the outer part of your crease, lightly blending the magenta and teal together.  I had to go back over the magenta and teal again after this part.  Apply a matte cream highlight shade to your browbone and inner corners.  Remove the tape from your outer eyes.  Next, line your waterline and inner corners with a shimmery champagne colored eyeliner.  Take the same magenta you used for your lid and apply it lightly along the lower lash line, followed by a cool taupe shade in the outer corners (to add more depth- I also think this makes the whole look more flattering!).  Line the outer half of your upper and lower lash line with a deep brown or bronze eyeliner, creating a wing, following the shape you created with the eyeshadow using the tape.  Finish with black mascara and you're done!

I'm also thinking of placing an order for some Fyrinnae eyeshadows- I'm loving the brighter eyeshadow colors for summer, and I've heard such great things about these indie makeup brands.  Do you guys have any recommendations for Fyrinnae, or another brand you love?

Quick EOTD: Neutrals with a green crease

Hey guys- just a quick post before I go to sleep.  This is actually a look I did last Friday, but I've been frantically running around with my head chopped off (at least it feels that way) that I never got around to posting it.  I've been crazy busy with finals- tomorrow is my last day before summer!- which explains the extreme lack of posting around here.  I'm so, so sorry!  I do plan on doing posts on my skincare routine, empties, and products that I wouldn't recommend just as soon as I've wrapped up the semester completely.
(PS- I'll hopefully get around to posting about some of the projects I completed this semester and how my classes were- to sum it up, the semester ended really well.  So much better than I thought.  Let's just say that I pushed myself pretty hard in my classes, and my efforts paid off. It's probably one of the best feelings ever!)

Anyway, with my lack of time for getting ready lately, my makeup has been super simple.  This was a look I did that I was actually able to spend more time on, yay!

Products used:

-Urban Decay Primer Potion (original)

-NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencil in Milk

-Coastal Scents 88 palette eyeshadows (see picture)

-Victoria's Secret eyeliner in Dark Chocolate

-L'Oreal Double Extend Illuminator mascara for green eyes

1. Matte cream- Inner corner and brow bone highlight

2. Light yellow- Inner 1/2 of lid

3. Medium leaf green- outer 1/2 of lid

4. Medium forest green- in outer 1/2 of crease blended inwards

5. Light yellowish green- used to blend colors together on lid and crease

6. Medium coppery brown- Pressed along lower lash line

That's it!  It's really simple and pretty basic application- just how I like it!

I'm still alive! Things I'm loving lately

Hi everyone!  I cannot apologize enough for my lack of posting lately.  I've been so swept up with school and friends, and I also lost a lot of my interest in makeup/experimenting with it.  I think when other things comes up, it really takes a backseat to what's important.
When I went home for Thanksgiving, though, my spark was ignited (my problem then was that I forgot my camera)- I wanted to buy makeup and actually try out different looks again.  So I know when I'm home for Christmas break I'll get back into posting more frequently.  I have a solid five weeks of break starting the end of next week, so you can bet the anticipation is killing me!  I'm going to be really sad to leave school, though- I've found such amazing people here to call my friends.  It's a great feeling to have people who genuinely care about you, and it's been just what I needed.

With that said, this post is long overdue.  My makeup routine has changed drastically over the last month or so, getting simpler and simpler every day!  But I still have my favorites that I resort to when I'm lacking the ounce of creativity left in me.  ;)
First off, I want to start out with the skin care products I've been using the last couple of weeks.  My skin is pretty sensitive and runs on the dry side, depending on the weather- but growing up, I've never had a problem with acne/breakouts.  Ever since starting college this semester, however, my skin has broken out almost every week.  One pimple would clear up, and then another would form, all in my T-zone.  This was SO frustrating!  Mainly because I'm not used to having actual "breakout" areas.
Anyway, over Thanksgiving break I purchased both of the following products and I've been using them ever since- so, almost two weeks now.  My breakouts have almost completely cleared up and my skin feels like normal again.  Hallelujah!

Aveeno Positively Radiant moisturizer spf 15 and Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Daily Scrub.  

I think this Neutrogena cleanser is what has helped my skin.  I was using the Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power-Cream Wash, but never noticed much of an improvement in breakouts.  This scrub, on the other hand, has exfoliating beads that are still gentle enough to use twice a day (which is recommended).  I follow this with the Aveeno moisturizer, and even though it has SPF, I use both day and night.  I just love it.  I'm thinking I may need something a little more moisturizing for colder days, though, so if anyone has any recommendations for that, I'm all ears!

Onto makeup, which is going to be short but sweet:

Maybelline Mineral Power powder foundation in Light 2-3- I think I've told you my obsession with this foundation before, but my laziness has made me obsessed again.  It's so easy to just buff onto my face and go.  After using this type of foundation, I honestly don't know if I'll ever be able to do liquid- it takes me so much more time/effort.  ;)  I'm curious as to how Bare Minerals works- if you've used it or have any recommendations, please let me know in the comments!  I'd love to hear.

Rimmel eyeliner in Black Gold- This is a gorgeous antique gold eyeliner that I've talked about before.  It doesn't stay in place the best, so I need to top it with some kind of powder, but the color is so pretty that I put up with it.  

Maybelline eyeshadow quad in Time For Wine- You all probably know my favorite eyeshadow color to wear is either champagnes or purples/berries.  I love using the two purples in this quad in my outer corner- so pretty!  I really don't recommend this palette for its quality.  The pigmentation isn't the best, (in fact, the other two colors hardly show up on me at all- see swatch), so if I want more color I use this:

Dark shimmery purple from my Coastal Scents 88 Matte palette- This is a really pretty eggplant purple that works well when I want a little more color.  It goes great with my green eyes!  I've also been using the matte black shadow from this same palette for lining my eyes, and a matte cream for highlight.

EOTD: Soft Lavender and Violet

This look was inspired by B's FOTD Friday, here.  Mine is quite different than hers I realize, but I rarely wear gel/cream eyeliner so that's where I drew my inspiration from (And the pop of color!).  I meant to take the "no eyeshadow" route that B did, but after I applied my eyeliner I thought it needed a little something else.  I actually love the way it turned out!

What I used:

- VS Pro eyeshadow primer

- Coastal Scents 88 Matte palette, skin tone color all over lid

- highlight color on brow bone and inner corners

- pale lavender on outer lid and blended lightly into crease

- Physicians Formula gel liner for Green Eyes- purple color, on upper lashline

- Coastal Scents 88 palette, dark violet color to "set" gel liner

- shimmery taupe on lower lashline 

- L'Oreal Extra Volume Collagen mascara in Black

Review: Coastal Scents 88 Matte eyeshadow palette (And swatches)

Hey guys, this is a much-more-overdue-than-expected review of the Coastal Scents 88 Matte palette I got as an early birthday present.  I played around with this a lot when I first received it, but since then I haven't used it as much as I thought I would.  I think the main reason for that is I've been sticking to hardcore neutral eye looks.  Don't ask me why!  Anyway, this palette deserves WAY more love from me than it's getting.

Before I get into the review (I'm sure you all know this but just incase), this is an 88 piece eyeshadow palette.  Coastal Scents makes this one along with a variety of other finishes.  There are also other companies like Sedona Lace and BH Cosmetics that make almost the exact same palette.  This is the most "popular" one, at least it seems it is from what I've read!

Price: $18.95

Availability: Online from coastalscents.com or amazon.com (My mom got mine from amazon because I had some money left on an Amazon giftcard)

Note: This palette is only 9" x 6.5" when closed.  To me it looks way bigger in pictures, so that's just a reminder so you don't get it and feel disappointed!  Each pan is a little smaller in diameter than a dime.  Despite the small size, though, you'll get many uses out of most colors.

I know many people complain about how "bulky" or big this palette is, but I think it's actually pretty compact.  It's thin and isn't too much bigger than my ELF Beauty Books.

This palette is described as "matte", but there are also "satin" and "shimmer" finishes mixed in (Coastal Scents website says it's almost a 50/50 mix).

Quality: These eyeshadows are, for the most part, highly pigmented and easy to apply.  I'd say the least pigmented colors are found in the browns/creams on the outer two rows (Which is unfortunate because those are the ones I use most often).  The majority of the bright colors (Middle rows) are matte finishes and have awesome pigmentation.  The lighter colors in the top left and right corners don't show up well/are lightly pigmented, and as a result I don't use them very much.  The pinks/purples and blues are just GORGEOUS, though, and are probably my favorite group in this palette.

All the eyeshadows regardless of their pigmentation are smooth and soft- a huge bonus in my book!  I hate having to dig my brush into eyeshadow pans to get product out.  I would recommend that you use a stiff brush or sponge with these, though.

Pros:

- Great value for the price you pay- 88 eyeshadows for under $20

- Beautiful bright AND neutral colors

- Most have great pigmentation, easily blendable

- Mix of finishes

Cons:

- Some of the matte colors can be a little chalky

- Poor pigmentation in some neutral colors

- Not recommended for people who aren't fans of bright colors

- Only available online (From what I know)

I've read mixed reviews about this palette- some people LOVE it and some don't, but personally I'm glad to have it.  My roommates aren't too into makeup, and one of them always asks me to do her eyes, so they ooh and ahh when I bring this out.  :)  It makes me feel like a makeup artist (wannabe, haha)!

Coastal Scents 88 Palette!! First Look

Tonight my parents, boyfriend and I went out to dinner to celebrate my birthday before I leave tomorrow.  It took my boyfriend and I probably an hour to finally say goodbye- that was hard.  He just left a little while ago so I'm still sad about it, but my mom had me open up one of my gifts to help cheer me up (I knew it was the palette ;).  It really made me feel better- I've been wanting this for so long!  I know what I'm going to be doing in the car ride tomorrow.... swatching these and taking pictures!  Haha.

(I actually expected this to be huge- it's big, but not ridiculously big.  Which is good!)

I know these palettes are talking about endlessly in the makeup blogging community- I've read both great things and horrible things about them- but I'm really glad I have my own now.  The pigmentation of a few I tried was just so-so, but all the others were nice.  I'm so excited to play around with different looks.  

I also love that there are a lot of cool-toned colors in this, and enough neutrals to balance out the crazy-bright colors.

What other Coastal Scents palettes should I try?  Do you guys like this palette if you own it?  I'd love to hear any thoughts/opinions you have.

Coastal Scents Brushes: Thoughts?

I'd love to hear any advice/thoughts you have on Coastal Scents' line of brushes.  I've done a lot of researching on youtube and various blogs recently, and so far they seem to be pretty decent (Especially for the low price tag).  These are the brushes that are in my "cart":

Small pencil crease black/silver

I've been wanting a pencil crease brush for the longest time.  I thought my Sonia Kashuk crease brush was it, but after washing it, it's just not pointed enough.

Synthetic deluxe crease brush

I have my MAC 224 crease brush already, but this one looks shorter and more compact.  I'm hoping it will blend faster than my 224.

White angled liner brush

MakeupbyTiffanyD on youtube recommended this one for making that perfect line with eyeliner.

Silver duo fiber stippling brush

I want a duo fiber stippling brush so badly for that "airbrush" effect!

Synthetic angle blush and define brush

I wanted one I saw on youtube reviews that was an 'italian badger angle blush brush', but couldn't find it on Coastal Scents.  This one got decent reviews on the webpage.

Pink kabuki brush

I read positive reviews on this one, too- that it's super soft and fluffy.  And pink!

These all together come to only about $30, but I'm still hesitant to place my order.  So if you have any recommendations on other brushes I should get, or ones I've listed here that I shouldn't get, please do let me know!  Thanks so much.
