A new year...a new do

Thursday, December 31, 2009

I have become so bored with my dark hair lately and I needed wanted a change. I have to admit though if I dye my hair any other color than dark brown I usually end up dying it back within a week or 2 weeks max. In my mind I think I want a change and I envision just the perfect color (which it NEVER turns out that way) and once I do it I feel like the lighter color washes me out. I went to the mall tonight and saw so many beautiful heads of dark and was tempted to color it back. It's been about 5 or 6 days since I colored it.

THIS is the color I always have in my MIND but my hair has different plans

This is what I did:
I bought a kit from the store in Dark Ash Brown (because my hair is so dark I knew that the ash blonde color would lighten it to a lighter brown shade).

Then the next day I used Garnier Color Breaks Dimensional Lightener No.3 Medium Brown to Dark Brown and put about 6 highlights on each side. This kit gave reallyyyyy natural looking highlights. I was scared that they would be really bold and dramatic but they blended perfectly. This kit you don't use a cap but pick and choose where you want to put the color. You grab a few strains of hair and put the cream on... it doesn't matter if that section touches your undyed hair...it won't color the hair it's laying on. It was so easy and simple. This kit was not a lot of money and well worth it.

I waited about 4 days and I highlighted my hair again with Revlon Frost and Glow in Honey. This one was more of a pain in the butt. It came with one of those silly looking plastic caps which are almost next to impossible to get any hair out of and when you do it always comes out tangled. Ugh. I didn't leave this one on very long (only 25 minutes... 60 minutes is max time) because I was really nervous it would come out too light and zebra striped. This one did make my hair a little lighter then I'm comfortable with but it didn't turn out bad like I was predicting.

So, in the end... am I happy with it? No. I never am. It came out too red and I wanted it to be a light ash brown... oh well. I think I should just stick to dark hair but I was bored and needed a change.

Here are some pictures of proof that I went lighter (and one before):

Tips on how to be a "Frugalista"

Monday, December 28, 2009

So what is a frugalista? It's someone who routinely tries to save money and live by that. Not 10% off sale on a $100 pair a shoes, I mean a real bargain hunter. Where before I may have been called cheap, or even tacky. Now saving money is much more fashionable and in fact necessary for many of us.

I find more ways all the time to save money. I find it exciting and feel like I'm doing more for my family. I've laid out a few tips that you may want to try if you haven't already.

1. After holiday---Love these. For instance: Bath and Body work and Victoria secret does their after holiday sales. They usually start the day after christmas but whoa hold on their...wait a few days more. I wait until about the 28th or 29th for these stores. You'll find great mark downs. 30-75% depending on the item. I bought myself 5 bottles of bath and body works body wash last year at this sale for around $2 ea. I put them away and they lasted me most of the year. It's hard to find a body wash even at Walmart for $2 and you got good stuff. Victoria's Secret--Love their heavenly perfume but did not want to spend the money. Last year I got a small bottle of Heavenly perfume for $2.99 and a heavenly body spritz with gold flakes in it for $5.99.

2. End of Season sales---Great for your kids or even yourself. Around the time they are starting to put the spring clothes out head directly for the clearance section for winter clothes clearance. I got my son a camo winter jacket last year for $5. I bought it a size bigger so he was able to wear it this year. At the end of summer clearance I got him a pair of Levi's shorts for $6. Originally $28 at JC Penney. Again a size bigger so he could wear them the next year.

3. Discount stores--Stores like Ross, Gabriel Bros., Ollies, Big Lots. Don't under estimate these kinds of stores. Ross is one of my favorites. I once got a pair of paper denim jeans (usually around $98 look it up if you don't believe me) for $20. I get Nike, Fisher Price, Disney, Adidas, Reebock, and other great name brand baby outfits for between $6-$10 at Ross and that's their everyday price. And when they have clearances it's even better. These stores are also great places to find houseware items like linens, bed sheets, glassware and more.

4. Are you're hobbies helping your finances or hurting?
I love finding hobbies that can make me money. For instance, learning crafts. It doesn't take much to be able to sell at craft shows if you enjoy crafting. In PA a seller's permit is free. Choose events wisely though, look at table fees will it be worth it for you?

Try going for walks, playdates with your kids at the park, sled riding in the neighborhood, squirt gun battles with the kids, making home made crayons, baking, blogging, home exercise programs (as opposed to going to a gym), sewing, making home made play doh, play board games with your kids...etc...etc. these things take little or no money and will strengthen your family relationship and/or make you feel better.

There's lots of opportunities online if you love the internet. I became a ChaCha guide. Check out www.chacha.com for more info. It's free and I can make money in my free time online.

5. Figure out how much something will cost and compare it to the alternative. The do it yourself method may not always be cheapest. For example: My kids like to have a birthday party with their friends. I've found the Burger King and McDonald's in my area will do a party for up to 10 kids for $45. Then $4 more for any additional kids. When you figure out the cost of a home birthday party--The cake, treat bags and fillers, party games and prizes, and paper products you would be spending just as much if not more than just letting somewhere like burger king handle it. Burger King provides a kid's meal for each party guest (which comes with a toy) cup cakes, access to the play area, and at least the one by me also gives the option of a clown who does face painting at no extra cost. You save money and don't have to do the clean up.

Home projects may be the same. Factor in the tools you'll need, the time you'll spend, the materials you need, etc. Most times it is the cheaper way to go but not always.

6. Free sample sites: Some of my favorites are--- www.freestufftimes.com and www.mysavings.com You can find great coupons and good free samples on these sites. If you're not sure if you want to spend the money on a product look for a free sample first.

7. Free sites that help you save and even earn money--
Christiania Crowns has a free invite only community. It is a vodka site so you have to be 21 or over. You can earn "crowns" by referring people to the site and doing other activities. Trade your crowns in for things like gift cards, free vodka (good gift), christiania merchandise and more: http://www.christianiacrowns.com/christianacrownscommunity

Mypoints.com---it's free to join the site. When you shop online go through their site to get to the vendor for example if you shop through Target on line you use the Target link on their site. You get point for shopping through their site that you can trade in for free gift cards of your choice. I ended up at the end of the year with a $100 HSN gift card I used to buy my kids Nintendo DS games for xmas.

7. You may qualify for assistance. I'm not advocating for everyone to apply for every bit of assistance out there but if you are living paycheck to paycheck there may be help. Many of these places have websites with qualification info online. Places like WIC, state programs, holiday help and more can be found online and many have printable applications.

8. Determine what is a want and what is a necessity. Having premium movie channels on your tv are probably not a need but a cell phone because you travel a lot for business probably is. What can you afford and what can't you afford. Check out the deals and specials too. Are you really saving more money with this cable provider than that one? Is it worth it for you to have a landline phone when you have a cell phone?

9. Home cooked meals---I know what you're thinking. I don't have time McD's is so much easier and this may be true BUT...it's possible. I worked full-time and have 3 boys. My hubby works 2nd shift. So dinner was on me. And yes, for a while I did stop at Mcd's 2 times a week. I figured out my spending in an average month on fast food and it was at least $100 considering it was about $15 a trip. I'm not saying I made chicken cordon bleu and steaks every night. There are quick items for busy families. Some examples: Cresent roll hotdogs, hamburger helper, Wanchai Ferry meals, Mac and cheese, Home made hamburges, etc. A package of hamburger helper is less than $2 at walmart and a lb of hamburger is about $2.50. So there..dinner for 4 for $4.50.

10. Gas--- oh boy isn't that something we all complain about. I mean gasoline for the car. While they don't have coupons for gasoline, or bargain days we can watch how we run our gas and do things to improve our gas mileage. Oil changes, fuel injection cleaners, and filters are small things that can help out. Can you combine trips in a week? For example: Can you drop of your prescription, go grocery shopping, pick up your prescription all in one trip rather than making two. Do you have to go and get wrapping paper today or can it way until tomorrow when you drop little johnny off for practice? Is there a closer store you can walk to (when the weather cooperates) to get milk and eggs rather than driving 10 miles?

These are just a few of many ideas. I'm sure some of you even have ones I've not thought of. Hope this helps with an New Year's resolutions this year!

Do the ChaCha!

Sunday, December 27, 2009

On my quest for finding a way to make extra money since I cut down to part-time, I came across a listing for ChaCha in a work at home listing. I checked out the website and read up on it. I did searches to find out what the people that work for ChaCha thought. And....What the heck is ChaCha?

ChaCha is a free service to answer your questions. You can text 242242 (which spells out ChaCha) or call 1-800-2ChaCha

You can ask ChaCha anything from: Does Joey like me? How many miles are there between Ontario Canada and Miami,FL? What does the word opulent mean? Who won the Steelers game? Whats the weather supposed to be like tomorrow? Can I have a good Pick up line?

Well you get the idea. Anyway, I tried to apply but at the time they were not hiring. I checked the site several times a month until finally I saw they were hiring. For work at home positions they hire what they call "guides". ChaCha questions are answered by real people or "guides". They have different guide positions. I finally applied and got accepted as a ChaCha guide. You can do it on your own time as much or as little as you want.

If you do searches for ChaCha you'll find credible information sources. ChaCha has been featured on the Ellen show. In my search I found an article that ABC had done. Yes there are some unhappy guides out there but no matter where you look for a job you'll find a few unhappy employees.

So far I like ChaCha. Give it a try. Maybe I'll help answer your question.

December Ins and Outs!

My first one of these... I don't feel like taking photos for a really "involved" post today!

Ins:

~ Sequins/Glitter!
~ Black skinny jeans
~ Uggs (I don't care that people have stopped wearing them, they keep my feet warm. It's -20 C here! Function over fashion!)
~ Scrapbooking (I'm making one for my cousin for Christmas, and it's so much fun!)
~ Sadie's elf costume
~ Christmas cookies
~ CHI silk infusion (amazzzing!)
~ ankle boots

Outs:

~ InStyle Magazine telling me to put lip balm on my eyelids. No Thanks!!
~ Cold and wet winters!
~ Frosty blue/silver eyeshadow... I know it's "festive" and in the season or whatever, but I just don't like it!
~ Harem pants. WTF?
~ Over-the-knee boots. If you can wear them without looking like a streetwalker, I applaud you.

My favourite Shoes and Boots

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

Hey girls! Just thought I'd share a look at my favourite "nice" shoes (I have some sneakers that I love too! Haha). As you can probably tell, I LOVE shoes. It's almost a disease, I think. I especially love boots. So, here are my faves....

Love these purple heels! From Old Navy, super cheap too! Took some getting used to in the walking department, and some blisters too, but they're so so so cute!My fave "nude" coloured heels. Unbelievably comfy, and they look amazing! Love the interesting detail of the strap, it makes them a bit special!
Adorable new ankle boots from Winners. I love buckles so much!

Do you girls love shoes as much as I do??

Save money go to the after christmas sales

Monday, December 14, 2009

Some people may call me cheap. One of my friends call me a "frugalista". Either way, I know how to save money. One of my favorite things to do is go to the after christmas sales. When my sibilings ask me "what do you want for christmas?" One think I tell them is a bath and body works gift card. Bath and body works has a semi-annual sale usually the last few days of december or very beginning of January. Keep your eyes opened for this sale. If I get even $20 in bath and body gift cards I get a ton of stuff. Christmas scents, gift sets, stocking stuffers etc are usually drastically reduced. Anywhere from 20% to as much as 60% off. I once got a set with a Lemon chiffon body scrub, lotion and body wash for $10 (originally $45). I stock up on the body washes too. The sales make them usually around $2 each which is cheaper than what I'd pay for a body wash even at walmart.

Another great after christmas shopping place is Victoria's Secret. About the same time that Bath and body works does their sale, Victoria's secret does their semi-annual sale. After christmas they also have their stocking stuffers, christmas scents etc drastically reduced. They also have the sale bins of bras starting at $9.99 and panties starting at $1.99. I wait for this sale all year to stock up on my under garments. I love their Heavenly perfume and last year got a bottle of it for $2.99 at this sale.

Walmart has a great sale on their gift sets directly after christmas. They mark their gift sets 50-60% off at this time. This is great for those christmas visits after the actual holiday or a good time to use those walmart gift cards you got for christmas. I also stock up on my christmas decorations for the next year at this sale. I buy lights, christmas serving items and whatever else I might find of interest for next year and save 50%. While everyone else may have paid $5 for a set of lights you'll pay $2.50 or less. And gift wrap buy a few rolls and put it away for next year. That really nice gift wrap you saw that you turned down because you thought "why spend the money they're just going to rip it off and throw it away". Yea you can get that one at half the price and use it next year.

Craft stores like Michaels are great too. Go after christmas and get your christmas crafting wants and needs to put away for next year. You'll get much cheaper that you would have before christmas and you'll have it so when, say, september comes around you can get a head start on your hand made christmas decorations, handmade gifts, or craft show items and you won't be so rushed.

Brunette or Blonde?

Friday, December 11, 2009

What do you think? Do you perfer blonde or brunette. Some people just look better in a certain color and then there are those (who I envy) who can pull off both.
I, myself am more partial to having dark hair but there are times when I really crave Kim Kardashianesque carmel hair.

Cameron Diaz
I think brown hair suits her skintone better. The dark chocolate color really warms up her face and really softens up her look. She looks great with blonde hair but dark hair wins by a long mile.

Megan Fox
Hands down brunette. Dark hair makes Megan Fox look very classy and extremely exotic. The blondeish hair looks ok on her but it takes away some of the sophistication that the dark hair adds.

Kim Kardashian
It's almost a tie but I think blonde wins... in my eyes.  I love the beautiful carmel color they used on her hair. It's the perfect carmel blonde. I think the blonde color made her look a few years younger. Black hair is just as stunning but I think I prefer the blonde just a little bit better.

Jessica Alba
Um... can I say neither? If I had to pick one then I guess I'd have to pick blonde. I think the dark hair is a little too dark for her and the blonde is way too blonde. Somewhere in between the two is perfect for Miss Jess.

Eva Longoria
Eva looks simply stunning with her God give dark hair (plus a few man made highlights). Dark hair warms up her skincolor and makes her glow! The blonde hair washes her out too much.

Victoria Beckham
Darn you, Victoria. You look amazing in whatever color you put on your head! Blonde, brunette, carmel, black or purple.... this posh lady can pull anything off.

How am i giving back this holiday season? Anyway I can. I don't have much money this year and my budget is uncomfortably tight but that doesn't mean i can't help. My kids' school is doing a "food drive war". I sent in shelf stable items with both of them. I try to donate to the salvation army collectors when I see them. I donated gift wrap and tape to our school so they had it for the kids shopping workshop. I usually do toys for tots every year as well.

Do you want to participate in the blogging contest too? I'd love to hear about what you're doing this year. Go to this page: http://www.twittermoms.com/forum/topics/tell-us-how-you-plan-to-give?commentId=2291408%3AComment%3A1254726

My experience with Gamestop

Thursday, December 10, 2009

I have shopped at Gamestop for many years. Don't have many problems and anything that i did have was minor and they fixed it immediately. I just wanted to share this story because...well...tis the season.

My christmas budget is very tight this year. My 2 oldest boys each wanted a nintendo ds. I was bound and determined to get those for them. I looked for the best prices both online and in store for a little over a month. I was hoping for black friday deals but no such luck. As I was skimming the gamestop website i noticed the pre-owned ds lites that were $40 less than the price of a new one. On the website it stated "guaranteed to work" but it also said colors may vary.

I decided to go up to my local gamestop and check them out. This way i could choose the color. Let's face it, my boys wouldn't not be as excited if they ended up with a pink ds. I really debated, should I get a pre-owned or sacrifice and get the new one. I mulled it over and decided to give the pre-owned a shot. (my checking account would thank me and my boys are young so i didn't think it would be a big deal). I got a black one and a white one since that was the only "boy" colors they had. I also paid $10 on each of them for a warranty that lasted for a year. They would fix or replace it if anything went wrong.

I got them home and my husband and I checked them out. When I opened the box I thought I would cry. The black one had sticker residue and scotch tape on it. We took it out and turned it on. It turned on just fine. While I was annoyed that they wouldn't even clean their pre-owned merchandise I tried to brush it off and said "that's ok i can clean it up no big deal". Then I get to the white one. This one is filthier than the black one. There was dirty finger print smudges all over the outside, When i opened it up there was this nasty orange gritty residue all around the monitor. It made me think of someone playing it with cheeto fingers.

Then we went to turn it on and the screen just flashed. I was furious by now. Not just because of the physical appearance but now it didn't work. My husband said "maybe it just needs charged" I said "oh yea you're right, that's what it is" So we plugged it in for about 20 minutes while we wrapped some other presents. We came back to it...the screen still only flashed and it would not turn on.

I packed them back in the box and told my husband "That's it I"m taking these peices of junk back to Gamestop tomorrow and tell them exactly what i think of their pre-owned ds's." The next day I took the ds's back,as I said, reciept and warranties in hand. I fully expected a fight to take them back since they were pre-owned. I intended to get my money back for everything and go buy them new somewhere else. I got to the register and as calmly as possible said to the cashier. "I just bought these pre-owned ds's here yesterday. The white one won't turn on at all and i am not happy with the condition of either one of them. By this point I was so mad I was actually hoping for a fight.

The girl was very nice and professional. Gave me no trouble about taking back the ds's and even credited the warranties. She asked what I would like to do. I had to think for a minute. I didn't expect the calm and friendly demeanor of the sales clerk. I looked at her for a minute and said 2 new nintendo ds lites and then I'll pay the differnce. AND they had the blue ones which is the ones my boys wanted in the first place.

While I hope that Gamestop will take better care in their pre-owned merchandise that they are selling to customers I am happy with the service and will continue to be a repeat customer.

What's the Most Surprising gift you ever received?

Twittermoms.com and Target are doing it again. Another great blogging contest. 10 winning bloggers will be selected to receive a $100 Target giftcard. I have so much fun with these. You can enter yourself. Go to this page: http://www.twittermoms.com/forum/topics/what-was-the-most-surprising

What's the most surprising gift I ever received? I gave birth to my 3rd son this year. Son number three though was the first child for my 2nd husband (I know try to stay with me here). I kept complaining about my old computer (had it for 7 years. The cd/dvd burner didn't work anymore, it was too slow and didn't have enough memory to do what i wanted it to do). My husband said "maybe for christmas" But I had my son in june. Jokingly I said to him "well you know I'm carrying your baby. Dealing with morning sickness, fatigue, and eventually pain you'll hopefully never experience. I think that deserves a computer" I said this when I was around 6 months pregnant. Of course I didn't really expect a computer for that (my son is reward enough) but about 2 weeks after I gave birth my husband said "I ordered you a computer it should be here this week". I thought he was kidding until it showed up at the house a few days later.

I'd like to hear about your surpring gift. http://www.twittermoms.com/forum/topics/what-was-the-most-surprising

Where oh where have I been?

I have really fallen off the bloggin' wagon. I'm so sorry. I really want WILL to get back into blogging again. I've been kinda busy lately. I have recently moved to a new house 3 weeks ago so packing up the old house and unpacking into the new house has been a big job... not to mention I have two little boys running around the house!:)
I have so many new products I want to tell you about that I think you will reeaallly love. That will be coming up really soon. So, until then here are some 5 really random facts about me.

1. Although it's bad for me I like to have two cokes a day. I'm really weird about it because I am not random about when I drink them. It's always the same time and the same way. I have a coke at nap time (1:30pm-4pm) and when my kids go to bed at 8:30pm. I always stick my coke in the freezer for a few mins to get it extra chilly. Note to self: don't leave it in the freezer too long...the can WILL explode.

2. I reaaallllyyy love to decorate but for some reason I can never get things how I see them in my mind or in a magazine. Maybe if I was a millionaire I wouldn't have that problem. Trying to decorate on a budget can be a challenge but it's doable.

3.I will see any movie Angelina Jolie is in....just because she is in it. Her beauty is like a freak of nature and it's just not fair. :)

4. I am only 5'2". People think I am taller for some reason (even in person) but then I stand up and they are like "wow you are short." Sometimes I wish I was taller but it's nice being short, too.

5. I can't stand to drink milk. It totally grosses me out. I will (very rarely) drink chocolate milk with ice in it but even then the thought if it makes me feel gross. Yuck.

Anyways, my beautiful friends.... I will be blogging again. I have missed it!!:)

How do you get your kids to sleep at night?

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

http://www.dramau.net/ and www.twittermoms.com is sponsoring a blogger contest. Answer teh question: What are your five tips & tricks for getting your kids to bed on time and getting them to stay in bed?

I've rarely had a problem getting my kids to sleep at night. I've stuck to the same ritual since I was able to start them on a regular bedtime.

1. Start them off early around 1 1/2 to two years old.

2. Decide on a bedtime and stick to it as much as possible. My kids bedtime is 8 pm except weekends and special days it's 9pm. (2 of my boys are 5 and 7).

3. Make it a soothing routine for bed. Take a bath/shower, then brush teeth then it's story time so there's kind of reward for completing the things they have to.

4. If you have to change the routine for a night or 2 (for example staying up for new year's eve) let them know what time it is and why they got to stay up for example: IT's new year'e eve so you get to stay up until midnight which is really late but it's a treat for the holiday"

5. Cut off any junk food such as soda and sugary snacks at least 2 hours before bedtime. This will help them to sleep better.

Most importantly stick to the routine as much as possible. My kids never give me trouble about going to bed because I've done the same routine for several years. As they get older you can adjust as you see fit.

Don't forget to check out http://www.dramau.net/ and www.twittermoms.com. If I win the blogging contest one of my lucky readers will also win.
