What We Won Wednesday---3rd week

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

"What We Won Wednesday" is a place to share our wins for the past week. It doesn't have to be just blog giveaways it could be: a scratch off ticket win, a basket party win, a national sweepstakes, twitter party or whatever you'd like to tell us about. If you can remember where you won it too, that would be great.

There are several purposes to this post

1. To encourage others
2. To share in the joy with our fellow readers and bloggers
3. To show that people really do win

So Congratulations every body. I hope you all have wins to share!

Wholesale Keychains Digital Keychain Review and Giveaway---CLOSED

I received a cute pink Digital Photo Keychain from Wholesalekeychains.com.  I love my pink stuff especially since I have 3 boys and the only pink in the house comes from me.  The digital photo keychain was a nice size.  Not too bulky, slender design, and a nice easy to use clip to attach it to a key, purse, backpack etc.

I attached it to the zipper on my purse for easy access to those proud momma moments.  The Digital Photo Keychain I received holds 140 of my photos! I think that's great for a digital keychain.  There are easy to use buttons on the back that let you toggle through pictures and turn it off and on.

The Digital Photo Keychain from wholesalekeychains.com came with a usb cable to plug it into your computer for uploading pictures and charging.  The software automatically loaded on my computer when i plugged it into the computer and turned it on. The uploading software was easy to use.

The picture screen is a nice size for a digital photo keychain.  You can adjust the timer to have it shut off automatically after so long.  It can automatically scroll the pictures when turned on or you can toggle through yourself.

The instructions are pretty easy to follow.  It only took me a couple minutes to figure out how to use it.

Review Summary:  At only $9.99 for this particular keychain I think this is a great value.  It is nicely made and easy to use.  This would make a $10 gift or stocking stuffer for the upcoming holidays.  Think about this for your teenager, a grand parent, or just about anyone who owns a computer.  You can even have them engraved for an extra $5.99.  I think this is a real bargain if you've ever wanted a digital keychain.

Check out wholesalekeychains.com digital photo keychain selection.  They have many more colors to choose from. There are also ones with more memory to hold even more pictures.

Review: Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadows

I have been so busy ever since I got here, so I wanted to start off by saying thank you for bearing with me! Classes don't even start until next Tuesday but there are events and random things to do all the time.  It's so much fun.
I haven't bought any new makeup since the three MAC eyeshadows I posted about last weekend (Nothing at the drugstore has caught my eye, and I'm trying to budget my money right now), but I wanted to do a review today of a product I purchased a few weeks ago.  This is a Revlon Illuminance creme shadow in the color Not Just Nudes.

What Revlon claims:
"Discover an endless spectrum of luminosity. Play with all 4 shades and watch your eyes light up a new way every time."

Price: Between $4.99 and $7.99
Availability: You can find this at most drugstores- anywhere that carries Revlon products.
I got mine at Walmart for $4.94, so it all depends on where you buy it and if it's on sale.

I chose the color Not Just Nudes because I wanted something I could use as a base for most of my eyeshadows.  I use these over my eyeshadow primer and underneath powder eyeshadows, mainly to make them "pop" more.  This particular quad comes with a dark brown, a medium brown, a dark champagne, and a light nude/skin-tone color (The one I use most often- it's so versatile).

Formula: These are like your standard cream eyeshadows, but they blend effortlessly and are really smooth.  It doesn't take much to get them out of the pan- one swipe and product is on your finger.  I typically use one or two swipes for my eyelid.

These don't crease as long as you're careful to use them over an eyeshadow primer and don't go too far into your crease.  I make sure I blend them out enough and don't use too much.  They really help my eyeshadows look more vibrant along with giving them something to adhere to!

Pros:
- Nice base for eyeshadows, don't crease
- Affordable and easily available
- Four eyeshadows in one compact
- Blendable and creamy
- Come in a variety of colors

Cons:
- If you can't get used to cream eyeshadows or dislike them, I wouldn't recommend these

Have you tried these?  How did they work for you?

Quick Rite-Aid Trip

I had some coupons I was itching to use at Rite Aid. Unfortunately, the Rite Aids around me are all pretty small and don’t have a lot of stock, so I was unable to get much of what I was looking for - but I was still able to score a pretty great deal!

What I was most looking forward to was the Wet n Wild sale they have going on this week: buy one get one free. I never really thought much of W&W (sometimes cheap is too cheap?) until they started releasing natural items. Their talc-free Natural Blend (formerly Natural Wear) powder is now my favorite powder in the world, and I go through about one compact a month! So I was glad to have a chance to stock up.

On top of the B1G1 free sale, I had a $2 off $6 W&W coupon from the August Rite Aid Video Values website (where you watch short commercials and get coupons in return).

So I got:
  • 1 Natural Blend powder at $4.99 and got a second free
  • 1 nail polish at $1.99 and got a second free

Bringing my total to $6.98. I really just bought the nail polish as a filler to be able to use the coupon, because the .99c items (like their eyeliner pencils) wouldn’t quite make $6, so I went over a little.

After the coupon, the total was $4.98. So I basically got all those items for the price of one powder!

The Gain dish soap was also a freebie. There was a coupon in the Sunday paper for $1.00 off any Gain, and it was on sale for 89c this week, so I paid nothing!

Total price of everything: $15.45

Price paid: $4.98!

What Up.

All right, basically this is a test to see if I actually figured out how to do this :)

I created this blog because I really hate when I just want a swatch of say, one color or one type of makeup, and I have to scroll through a 1000-word review just to find the pictures. I won't review any products here, not because I'm lazy; I just know that some people could care less.
Be patient with me, because this is my first blog ever (!) unless you count those lame livejournal things from high school. I have lots of pictures to take and add, and hopefully it won't be hard for me to figure out how to organize them so they are easy for you to find.
Some of the pictures have different lighting. I try to get the most true-to-life colors as possible. So even if the background looks a little yellow, the swatch colors should be fairly accurate.
Here we go!
Enjoy :)

End-of-month Walgreen's trip

Monday, August 30, 2010

The August Walgreen's coupons expired Saturday, so I headed over for a last-minute shopping trip to use them up!

I wasn't very organized about it, and ended up getting some things I didn't need, and didn't get some things I'd intended to, but I think it turned out all right!

What I got:
  • Bubble mailers - $1.99, on sale for 39c (limit 3) 5.97 $1.17!
  • Pilot Frixion erasable pens - $3.99 on sale for $3.49 minus $2 in coupons: $1.49!
  • Uniball gel pens - $4.19 on sale for $2.49 minus $1.50 coupon: $0.99!
  • Burt's Bees Acne Solutions face wash - usually $9.99 on clearance for $4.99 minus $2.00 coupon $2.99!
  • [Not pictured] Walgreen's brand bleach 96 oz- not sure of usual price, on sale for $0.99, bought two $1.98
If I had paid for everything at regular price, it would have been over $24, but I spent a grand total of $8.62! Pretty boring stuff, I know, but all useful. I use the bubble mailers like crazy for mailing out books and other things I swap, and they're usually expensive! Both kinds of pens are super awesome, both brands are actually Japanese (did you know Pilot and Uniball were Japanese companies? I didn't until recently) and I had used the pens in Japan and loved them. And I donate the bleach to the animal shelter I volunteer at - it was number one last week on their most-needed list of supplies!

I think the Burt's Bees face wash was the best deal, since their stuff is pricey and rarely goes on sale. I don't know why it was on clearance (it was the one and only bottle) so I was pretty lucky! :)

EOTD: Neutral 'smokey' eye with MAC Club+Naked Lunch

Sunday, August 29, 2010

Hey everyone, today I have a really simple EOTD to share with you.  I was anxious to test out my new MAC eyeshadows so I didn't waste any time.  :)  This shows how Club transforms depending on how you use it a little better than I can describe.  I used it along with Naked Lunch to make a look pretty wearable for everyday.
(PS- sorry about my eyebrows in advance, lol!  I need to trim them)

Products used:
- VS Pro eyeshadow primer
- MAC Naked Lunch (all over lid and up into crease)
- light color for highlight
- MAC Club (outer corner and blended into outer crease, along upper lash line)
- Clinique eyeliner in Roasted Coffee (upper and lower lash lines, smudged)
- L'Oreal Bare Naturale mascara in Black

I applied the Clinique eyeliner (it's a retractable eyeliner pen), and then applied Club over it and blended it upwards.  This is where Club really shines!  When layered over brown it looks like it does in the pan- a dark, duochrome-y greenish blue.  So pretty.  When it's on your skin, though (mine anyway), it looks more reddish brown.  The warmth of it pairs wonderfully with Naked Lunch.

(Top- Naked Lunch, Club)
(Bottom- Clinique eyeliner, Club layered over it)

Naked Lunch is really close to my skin tone, which is why it doesn't show up well in pictures, sorry about that!

Thanks for reading, guys!  Hope you're all having a nice Sunday.  I just took a walk up the street that my dorm building is on, only to find a Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, ULTA, Sephora, Charlotte Russe, and more just minutes away!  So I'm doing alright.  ;)

DIY natural skin care: Baking soda exfoliator

Saturday, August 28, 2010

We all know that baking soda is good for making cookies and deodorizing your fridge, but did you know it's also a great DIY skin care tool? One of the many properties of baking soda is oil and dirt removal, so you can scrub pretty much anything in your house with it to make it clean and fresh, but it's also gentle enough to use on your skin.

Baking soda is very finely ground, so when used as an exfoliator, it leaves your skin super smooth. It's also less abrasive than other natural exfoliants, like those made from crushed nuts or shells, which are unevenly textured and can damage your skin.

Make a paste of 1 part baking soda and 3 parts water, or just mix a little bit into your favorite face wash to turn it into a luxe exfoliant.

I use it to scrub away the peely skin I get from using benzoyl peroxide. It gets all the flakes off and leaves my skin incredibly smooth!

Other beauty uses for baking soda:
  • Make a paste and spot-treat acne
  • Mix in with your shampoo for a clarifying wash
  • Add a half cup to your bath water for a relaxing soak
  • Put a couple teaspoons in some water for instant DIY mouthwash

I feel like heaven with MAC!

Today my parents and I did a little shopping around in Chicago's "Magnificent Mile"- it's a strip of Michigan avenue that has basically every retail store you could ever imagine.  And there are a ton more stores down the side streets!  If you like shopping, it's an awesome place to be.
My mom and I were walking around when I remembered I wanted to find a MAC counter- I've been so anxious to see these products in person (And actually buy something), after not being able to for a few years.
The MUA was super helpful and nice; she tried out a few products from the Fabulous Felines collection on me, but nothing really stood out.  I loved the look of the Superslick eyeliners, the eyeshadow quads, and Mauvement pigment, but I just wasn't sold.  She basically went through each type of makeup (Blush, lip gloss, lipstick, eyeshadow), and the three things that I fell in love with were Club, Trax, and Naked Lunch eyeshadows.  Naked Lunch and Trax were the ones I got years ago, so I'm not surprised I still love them!  I am so excited that I got these.  :))

(Clockwise from bottom: Trax, Naked Lunch, Club)

Naked Lunch

Club

Trax

Naked Lunch, Club, Trax

Naked Lunch is probably my favorite champagne-colored eyeshadow.  It's lovely as a lid color with another shade in the crease.
Club is the one I've never tried before, but I just fell in love.  It's so cool!  It has so many different colors in it, so while it looks like a muted dark green/blue/gray in the pan, it has some red/brown in it that shows through when you swatch it.  Really, really pretty- I've read that you can get away with just wearing this as your eyeshadow.
Trax is a gorgeous deep reddish purple with gold shimmers in it.  The swatch above doesn't do it justice- I can't believe I didn't like this one years ago when I first tried it.  If you have green eyes I'd definitely recommend it.
Naked Lunch is a frost, Trax is a velvet, and Club is a satin, FYI.

I'm definitely going back on September 2nd when the Viva Glam lipglasses are launched!
Do you love or own any of these eyeshadows, too?

PS: That Revlon finishing powder I talked about in my last post isn't anything special- it's pretty, yes, but for its normal price of $11.99 I wouldn't recommend it.  If you find it on clearance like I did, I think it's a good buy!

Day 30: A picture of you last year and now, how have you changed since then?

Day 30: A picture of you last year and now, how have you changed since then?

haha I'm late last day but I have good excuse..and that is I was packing for my dorms and helping to take care of that little kitty with a dish soap bath. But anyways~here are two pictures of me from last year and recently.

Last Year:

Now:

I guess I have changed quite a bit. I'm much smarter now..not in school but as in dealing with problems and stuff like that. I am becoming sharper in figuring out which people are just not what they seem and a lot more =D! I also became chubbier @_@ but it's fluctuating right now. Back then I had a worst temper and I'm more understanding but I still have my once in a while tantrums. I've learned a lot of new and complicated facts about my family and relatives. It seems I've lost trust in many people and things as well. I know a lot of these sound kind of depressing but in a way me learning all of these is actually positive. I've also gotten kind of lazier but hopefully that changes during school. Last of all I think I've become more free and um..I believe I've stopped dressing up and trying to make myself look better. =_= That is actually bad because I want to look good but I just lost motivation..maybe this is the result of being with one guy for so long? Or..maybe because i'm in college and I don't know these people so I could care less what they think of me? (That's not entirely true actually..I still care XD) Well that is the end of my challenge. I ended it by being late~Hopefully after this I will continue to post on a regular basis and not just give up on my bloggie. Well farewell 30 day challenge<3

My home away from home & Revlon Mineral Finishing Powder

Friday, August 27, 2010

You guys, Chicago is amazing!  I'm all moved in (finally) and have been having so much fun.  Busy, but it's all really exciting.
Here are a few pictures I took "post" move-in, plus some of our view! (We're on the 17th floor)

My closet area

Bed/desk (I forgot to bring my "decorative" pillows, lol)

We have a teensy view of the lake, lol!

View down the street

At night

We made the trek to Target this afternoon and I found one of those Revlon Colorstay Mineral Finishing powders on clearance for $5.98!  They had it in the color Brighten- of course I had to get one.

This gives a really pretty glowy highlighted look to my face- I love it.  Do you guys have any of these?  I think they come in a couple different shades.

I went to the CVS across the street from me- it's pretty small and picked over, but I'm happy with it.  :)

Have a good weekend, everyone!  <3

Review: Organic Fiji Coconut Oil

EWG safety rating: 0 (that’s excellent!)

Budget friendly? $12.99 for 13 oz ($1.00/oz) on Amazon.com

I’ve heard about the wonders of coconut oil from several people before trying it myself. This particular brand is 100% pure coconut oil, all organic and no additives. It has a fabulous natural scent, like a freshly cracked-open coconut. Coconut oil is unique that it’s solid at room temperature, and liquefies as it gets warmer. It’s a little hard to extract from the jar when it’s solid, but in the summer at least, it alternates between a slushy consistency and pure liquid - both of which are easy to apply. I’ve used it on my body and my lips, for which it’s very hydrating. When used as a body lotion, it locks the moisture in all day. It's also great for softening-up rough patches like knees and elbows.

Word of caution: a little goes a long way (when it hits your skin, it liquefies and spreads easily) and if you use too much or don’t rub it in enough, you get a little greasy. I end up with cat fur stuck to me in places it’s not absorbed all the way! But overall, it moisturizes very well, has a wonderful scent, and is all natural – no chemicals absorbed into your body! I definitely recommend it.

Pros:  100% organic, pure coconut oil (no additives), very hydrating, smells fantastic

Cons: Hard to scoop out when solidified, greasy if not rubbed in all the way

Overall: A

Super cheap Target find!

I got lucky at Target today to find this Colgate Pro Clinical toothpaste on clearance from $2.99 to $1.48!

I think it was on clearance because of the box is a little beat up, it was right on the shelf with the rest of them, which weren't discounted. I have been hanging on to a $1 off manufacturers coupon for this, so I finally got to put it to good use - the toothpaste cost me only .48c!

Of course, I was so excited about getting the deal that I didn't check the ingredients until I got home. I'm disappointed to see it includes sucralose as a sweetener. I avoid artificial sweeteners in my food, and don't like the current trend of adding it to other products as well... is it really necessary? It's in the mouthwash I use too. I guess it's not as bad as ingesting it, but still...

Review: CostumeSuperCenter.com

Around about July, my kids start telling me what they want to be for Halloween.  They usually change their minds about a bazillion times until I have to pin them down to make a decision.  This year I decided to pin them down sooner.  Getting costumes for 3 boys usually gives me a headache.  "I want that one, no wait I want that one, wait I'm going to look at this one again?"

Last year I ordered my oldest son's costume online.  Sooo much better.  They could click through the costumes and decide that way.  We started looking through CostumeSuperCenter.com They had a nice selection of boys costumes.  There are categories to easily find what you're looking for. It was also nice to see that I could forego sifting through the girls costumes as well since they have a boys Halloween costumes link too.

My 2 older boys are really into Star Wars right now so of course they wanted to look at the Star Wars costumes.  Right away my oldest was looking at the Child Boba Fett Costume.

He kept going back and forth as to which one he wanted to be.  He looked through all the other boys Halloween costumes as well.  One of my favorites was the Zombie Skate Punk costume for only $28.99.  My oldest considered it but went right back to the Child Boba Fett Costume.  I let my kids decide what they want to be each year then it's up to me to figure out the most budget friendly way to do it.  ( I'm no Martha Stewart so it usually means just finding the best deals).

So my oldest decided that, yes he did in fact want to be Boba Fett for Halloween this year.  I gave him a warning that once we got it, that's what he was going to be.  That means no changing.  He agreed.  We got the costume from CostumeSuperCenter.com really fast.  He just had to try it on:

What a show off lol.  He's happy with his costume.  The prices are great.  The shipping is fast. I really can't believe the deals on the costumes for the types of costumes they have.   I feel better knowing one costume is taking care of.  Now only 2 more to go.

Browse through CostumeSuperCenter.com and tell me what you think your kids would like to be.

Coastal Scents 88 Palette!! First Look

Tonight my parents, boyfriend and I went out to dinner to celebrate my birthday before I leave tomorrow.  It took my boyfriend and I probably an hour to finally say goodbye- that was hard.  He just left a little while ago so I'm still sad about it, but my mom had me open up one of my gifts to help cheer me up (I knew it was the palette ;).  It really made me feel better- I've been wanting this for so long!  I know what I'm going to be doing in the car ride tomorrow.... swatching these and taking pictures!  Haha.

(I actually expected this to be huge- it's big, but not ridiculously big.  Which is good!)

(Without flash)

(With flash)

These are just some random swatches to show you the awesome pigmentation!

I know these palettes are talking about endlessly in the makeup blogging community- I've read both great things and horrible things about them- but I'm really glad I have my own now.  The pigmentation of a few I tried was just so-so, but all the others were nice.  I'm so excited to play around with different looks.
I also love that there are a lot of cool-toned colors in this, and enough neutrals to balance out the crazy-bright colors.

What other Coastal Scents palettes should I try?  Do you guys like this palette if you own it?  I'd love to hear any thoughts/opinions you have.

Before I forget, here are some pictures from tonight- I had my mom be our photographer so I'd have some photos of just the two of us!  These make me happy to look at.

(Does anyone else notice that pictures uploaded on Blogger lose their quality a little?)

Have a good night everyone.  <33
